Understanding The Fluke 87
Warranty
Like most high quality products, Fluke Corporation has put a lifetime warranty on the
Fluke 87 mulitmeter. However, just glancing over the warranty language can be a bit confusing. Here is a plain
English summary of what you get in your Fluke 87 warranty.
What Does "Lifetime Warranty" Mean
First, let's define "lifetime." The term lifetime does not refer to your lifetime. It
refers to the length of time that Fluke continues to manufacture the 87V - ending with 7 years after the final
production date. However, this length of time is guaranteed to be at least 10 years after the initial purchase for
all models purchased by consumers.
This is where it can get confusing. If you purchase the Fluke 87v digital multimeter tomorrow, and the company stops producing it in 8
years, you would still be covered under warranty for two additional years. But, if you purchased an 87 V tomorrow
and they stopped producing it in 15 years, your warranty would end when they stop producing the 87 V (15 years),
since it has been over 10 years since your purchase.
Who the Warranty Covers
The warranty covers the original registered purchaser and is not transferable to a second
owner. It must also be purchased from a Fluke Factory Authorized Distributor. So if you
buy your Fluke Multimeter used from another
person, or from an unauthorized merchant, the warranty is no longer valid. To establish original ownership, you
will need proof of purchase such as a receipt or bill of sale that also has your name on it, date, and location
purchased.
What the Warranty Covers
Fluke will at its option, repair at no charge, replace, or refund the purchase price of a
defective product within the warranty period. The warranty also covers the LCD for ten (10) years from the date of
purchase. After that, for the remainder of the lifetime of the device, Fluke will replace the LCD for a fee based
on then current component acquisition costs.
What the Warranty Does Not Cover
The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear of mechanical components, accident,
abnormal conditions of operation or handling, or using outside of product specifications, misuse, contamination,
alteration, fuses, or disposable batteries.
So, How Good is the Warranty?
Overall, we think the lifetime warranty is pretty reliable, and provides even greater
value for an already top-notch product. Fluke is one of the most well known brands in the electrical industry and
they will certainly be around for a long time to come.
